Over the last few decades, many musicians have tried to raise environmental awareness with their music. Songs that deal with environmental issues can be found throughout all genres. The following songs are all applicable to Conservation Biology in some way or the other. The entire lyrics of the songs can easily be found on the Internet, the following download gives short summary on the songs and explains shows to which conservational terms they relate to. I included the whole lyrics for Jonie Mitchell's song "Big Yellow Taxi", which is famous for it's environmental statement. Ask the music teacher of your class if he/she would be willing to discuss or sing one of the songs in class. Students could also pick songs themselves, which might be motivational since students can include songs of their favorite bands or music they really like and can relate. Students should then explain or write how their song relates to what they have learned in Biology.
